Permafrost constitutes a major problem for buildings, roads, etc. in the Arctic region. In the summer, when the upper layer of earth thaws, the water does not drain away because of the underlying frost. When the thawed layer freezes and expands, buildings and roads swell in size. The stability of frozen deposits and the financial viability of various methods of laying foundations are, therefore, obvious areas of research for the centre.
